STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — One Staten Island Girl Scout is marking Women in History month by helping a community leader create a new, innovative egg hunt for the visually impaired.
Katherine Garlisi, a Girl Scout Cadette from Troop 5278 and a seventh grader at Myra S. Barnes Intermediate School, is assisting Holly Bonner, director of Accessibility Services for City Access New York (CANY) with the first Beeping Egg Hunt to be held in New York City.
Each spring, organizations across the five boroughs host a variety of Easter egg hunt celebrations. For children and parents with disabilities, actively participating in these fun and festive events is not always possible.
CANY is working to change this.
The agency is hosting the first ever “beeping egg” hunt on Staten Island on April 5 at the Commons Cafe’ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free event is an opportunity for both the blind/visually impaired and the sighted community to interact and learn from each other.
The eggs have a small battery mechanism inside them, allowing them to beep, chirp or vibrate so the blind and visually impaired can actively participate.
