Beeping Egg Hunt for the visually impaired attracts crowd in Bloomfield

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.– 3,000 Easter eggs were placed across the grassy area in front of the COMMONS Cafe in Bloomfield on Friday afternoon for the second annual Beeping Egg Hunt.

The event, run by Holly Bonner, founder of BlindMotherhood.com, is put in place to ensure the visually impaired and wheelchair users can participate in a fun spring rite of passage. The event has grown since last year. Organizers say they dumped 120 pounds of candy and 40 more beeping Easter eggs into this year’s festivities than they did last year.

“It’s kind of like a spring pastime they’ve never been able to enjoy before,” Bonner said before the first of four hunts began. “A lot of parents who have sibling children say they’re being able to participate with their brothers or sisters was really enjoyable for them.”

The “beeping eggs” have a small battery mechanism inside allowing them to chirp or vibrate so the blind and visually impaired can actively participate.
