The Commons Café – an eatery with a charitable bent located at the Teleport in Bloomfield — was the setting Saturday for its first-ever Community Day, a family-friendly event helping to raise awareness and funds for cause of autism.
Many Staten Islanders, many with students at PS 50, turned up to the event, from which 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit Autism Speaks.
“We want to raise money but, more than that, awareness for the cause of autism, because awareness breeds tolerance and acceptance for kids on the spectrum,” said Alissa Conlin, a volunteer with Autism Speaks. Ms. Conlin also is organizing a team from PS 50 for an Autism Speaks walk on Oct. 27 at the College of Staten Island.
